Former Director of IT at Cancer Research UK Mary Hensher has taken up a 'fresher' post as CIO of the University of Surrey.

Hensher started her career as a database programmer before working at KPMG, and spent more than a decade at fellow accounting and business services provider Deloitte - becoming CIO and Partner in Charge of IT at the firm in 2003 following the successful integration of the consultancy's technology with that of the former Arthur Andersen firm in 2002.

A French and Russian scholar, Hensher took on the role at Cancer Research UK to transform the charity's IT function "into a nimble, flexible, innovative organisation fit for the future".

Hensher left Cancer Research UK in April this year ready to start at the Guildford-based University of Surrey along with 4,000 'freshers' this semester, where she will be overseeing the technology supporting 2,338 staff and 15,705 students.
