The Ministry of Defence has appointed Brigadier Alan Hill, previously the British Army's Head of Information Superiority responsible for Army CIO activities, as its Head of Operate and Defend.

Brigadier Hill held his army CIO position from September 2011 until last month, having previously been a Commanding Officer of the 3rd Division Signal Regiment and the Commander of the 11th Signal Brigade.

In November last year Brigadier Hill was the focus of a CIO profile interview where he discussed training and tackling a skills shortage, 'soldier-proof' technology and the true meaning of information security in the battlefield.

Placed highly by the judges in the 2014 edition of the CIO 100, Brigadier Hill spoke during last month's CIO Summit about leadership in the business space and the battle space, his strategy of "collect, communicate and exploit", and working with young soldiers as digital natives.
