The new CIO at Italian online fashion pureplay Yoox - which is acquiring London-based Net-a-Porter - is experienced British financial services and retail technology director Alex Alexander, who has also performed interim C-level technology roles in UK central government.

Bologna-based Yoox sells men's and women's clothing and accessories to "more than 100 countries worldwide", selling off overstocked or unsold items from previous fashion seasons by big-name designers including Prada, Dolce & Gabana, Gucci and Armani.

Alexander has moved from a role as Multichannel Technology Director at Walmart Labs in Silicon Valley where he led the development of US giant's online platform, its click-and-collect product, and the world's first collection service from London underground stations.

He was also the Multichannel IT Director at Sainsbury's, and had stints as Senior IT Director at Global Retail Banking arm of Barclays, and as Head of Banking Delivery at Egg, the UK's first online-only bank.

"Inspired by startup culture and passion for ecommerce", the new Yoox CIO went on to form an ecommerce consultancy startup with two other Egg executives with clients including HMRC and the Ministry of Justice, Dixon's, British American Tobacco, Aviva and BT Global Services.

Founded in 2000 and backed by a number of venture capital and private equity firms, Yoox listed on the Milan Stock Exchange in 2009.

When the €3.2 billion merger between Yoox and Net-a-Porter was announced earlier this year, no details were provided about how the companies will go about creating the single shared technology platform, nor if it woulud affect the work currently being led by Net-a-Porter CIO Hugh Fahy to transform the company's technology platform to enable it to be more innovative.
