CFO Expectations of IT

The 2012 CIO 100 is our ranking of the top CIOs in the UK. This listing awards the IT leaders and company directors that are transforming their organisations through technology leadership.

Welcome to the latest CIO 100 which has gone through a significant transformation over the last 12 months. And I use the word transformation to describe it and its editorial agenda. At CIO UK we believe CIOs are the engines for business transformation and as your title, we believe CIOs will drive positive transformation through their organisations.

Since 2008 the world economy, and in particular the European economy, has been a difficult environment to operate in. A wider analysis of the growth of the BRIC economies, the rising cost of energy and commodities shows that even in better times our organisations will have to transform the way they operate in order to protect themselves and to serve their customers and workforce appropriately. Technology is the ally organisations will benefit most from an alliance with. But success will only result if CIOs embrace the transformation agenda and organisations and their boards understand that if they do not engage with, understand, promote and lobby for technology led transformation they will struggle to adapt to the environment that prevails.

This new CIO 100 is intended as a benchmark for all CIOs. The top 20 are what I and the CIO panel of experts believe to be the foremost transformative CIOs in the British economy over the last 12 months. In previous eras CIOs have been judged by the size of their estate, the budget available to them or the size of the organisation they provide technology to. In 2012 CIO UK believes this to be a completely unsatisfactory judgement on the benefits technology and CIOs can offer organisations.

As Editor in Chief of CIO UK I hope the CIO community will embrace this benchmark to see how the leaders not only transform their organisations but how they communicate transformation and operate or influence at board level.

The CIO 100 is completely subjective and at CIO UK we welcome open discussion and look forward to debating its existing ranking and your thoughts for the next CIO 100. Personally I expect that from this transformation onward the ranking will change radically with each year as the economy changes and different sectors grow or react to the environment they operate in.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Desktop modernisation

On the one hand, there is the need to keep the existing desktop environment efficient, secure and running. On the other hand, there are workforce demands to use new devices and applications, to increase productivity. How can you address both of these requirements? The answer is... Desktop modernisation.

Aligning CFO and CIO priorities

Forward-thinking organisations are viewing cloud computing as an investment in business transformation, not just a way to cut costs for IT. Thanks to the cloud, CFOs and CIOs are moving beyond the “either/or” discussions that once forced them to make tradeoffs between IT cost cutting and the creation of new business agility and value.
