The economic downturn has been beneficial to public transport operator Arriva, its nationwide network of bus and rail franchises have witnessed increased usage. In tandem, the company, which is headquartered in Sunderland, has invested in technologies that improve operational efficiency and improve customer service.

First half results for 2009 saw an increase in group revenues by 10 per cent. Arriva invested technology to monitor fuel usage of its bus fleet. Over a thousand vehicles have been fitted with the system.

Bus passengers in Yorkshire and Kent have also witnessed technological improvements with the introduction of mobile phone based ticketing.

CapGemini won a 10 year extension to an existing deal with Arriva London, which operates the capital's famous red buses, to develop applications for accounting, crew management and mileage monitoring.

Arriva took over the largest express rail network in November 2007, winning the franchise from Virgin Rail, (read about the switch over here) The CrossCountry express train network has been investing in online ticketing.
