Much-loved operator of John Lewis and Waitrose, the John Lewis Partnership's IT has recently been focusing on business intelligence to gain a better understanding of shopping trends and map out stores in a meaningful way, through relationships with suppliers like Business Objects (now part of SAP) and Ab Initio.
John Lewis had a healthy Christmas 2009 into early 2010. The retailer said revenues at its stores for the five weeks to 2 January 2010 were £500 million, with Waitrose reporting a sales increase of 20.8 per cent.
As described by former MIS manager Mike English, profiled here, the company is also attempting to be very fast-moving in reacting to price changes at competitors. However, the group has reined in elements of a large data warehouse project. English recently embarked on a project to replace tills across the group's network of stores.
More broadly, John Lewis is about to embark on a large-scale project to consolidate systems as part of a transformation programme, and is working to integrate its first Irish store in Dublin.
