Although the airline operators have had a difficult year as a result of the credit crunch, aircraft engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce has had a good 2009 with strong revenues in the first half of the year thanks to an order book worth £57.5 billion.
Rolls-Royce, no longer the same company as the famous car marque, won government funding to build three new state of the art factories during the summer. Peter Mandelson, business secretary, awarded the funding to the company under its "advanced manufacturers" subsidy programme. The factories will provide engineering to the aerospace sector as well as nuclear power.
Rolls-Royce was targeted by Chinese cyber spies in 2007 along with oil company Royal Dutch Shell, security service MI5 said.
