A new makeover
Avon is one of the world’s best known brands. In Northampton, where it has its UK headquarters, the company is known locally as ‘ding dong’ a reference to its 1960s and 70s iconic advertising campaign. In spite of being associated with 1960s it is a massively successful organisation and has effectively used technology in the evolution of its business model. It is now the world’s leading direct seller of beauty products with an annual turnover of $7.7 billion. It markets to women in 143 countries globally through 4.9 million independent sales representatives – ‘Avon ladies’ as they used to be known. In the UK alone, there are 160,000 Avon representatives, selling to nearly 8m customers.

Compliance Trick
Compliance is defined by at least one online dictionary as ‘the act of complying with a wish, request, or demand; acquiescence’. It also has a medical context meaning a ‘willingness to follow a prescribed course of treatment’. A final reading of the word is ‘a disposition or tendency to yield to the will of others’. We’re issuing a challenge to IT directors: have you unwittingly followed all three courses of action since the dot-com collapse led to the growth of compliance, IT salesman style?

The promise of good governance
Catherine Doran, CIO at Network Rail, knows the value of IT governance. She recognises its practises and tools can maximise the value and control of IT real estate. In fact, Doran believes IT governance is a fundamental strategic practise for the enterprise, having seen its impact in a variety of roles including tenures as CIO at NatWest, Capital One in Europe, BT Retail and currently at Network Rail. “Governance supports the business plan by providing enterprises with security and access control, along with the development of a robust and reliable infrastructure,” says Doran.
