A Database with Destiny

Once upon a time, not so long ago, there was a series of terrible wars. At stake was control of the multi-million dollar database sector. The shadow of the empire of Oracle hung over the market while the rebel forces of Ingres, Sybase and Informix attempted to topple the overlord Ellison through a series of increasingly fraught technology and marketing campaigns. Ultimately, they failed and the rebel forces scattered throughout the rest of the industry as the empire expanded its reach...

Open for business

Is database technology a commodity software or vital piece of enterprise infrastructure? Until recently the giants of the database industry would have insisted that the latter definition was correct. But now the winds of change are blowing – it may only be a breeze at the moment, but there is the prospect of a hurricane in the not too distant future. Technology futures

Technology alchemists have been promising to turn base data into golden nuggets of information for the last 20 years. Granted they have had their successes but the path is littered with fool’s gold, alongside genuine gems of information that although beautifully formed, arrived too late and at too great a cost to be of much use.
