British Airways expects to save more than £4.5m in the first year after replacing legacy systems with an airfare analysis tool from aviation technology company Sita.

The application allows the airline to react to market forces, and alter fares to increase its competitiveness.

BA senior manger of revenue management, Jerry Foran, said that by using the application, "BA has been able to simplify the business management of more than a million fares we publish each year."

Foran said at least £1.5 million of the savings has come through the decommissioning of legacy systems. The ability to perform a comprehensive ticket audit process would lead to a 10 per cent boost in audit quality, and generate further saving of £3m a year.

Foran said the Sita airfare insight product "filters and displays important competitor price changes allowing us to respond not just quickly, but in an informed and considered manner, through whatever distribution channel we choose."

More than 200 million fares are published worldwide at any one time, and full-service airlines will update fares several times a day, according to Sita.
