Alliance & Leicester IT director Ian Buchanan joined the bank’s board today in his new role as group manufacturing director. The former Nomura CIO has been with the company since 2005.

As group manufacturing director Buchanan is responsible for back office operations that support both the retail and commercial banking arms of Alliance & Leicester, customer service and retains his group IT responsibilities from his former role as group IT director.

“Ian Buchanan joined the Group as IT director in 2005, with a background in IT and operations leadership,” said David Bennett, group chief executive of Alliance & Leicester. “He has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills and business acumen, and we look forward to further contributions he will male to the Group’s success.”

Buchanan’s promotion is part of a raft of senior management changes at the bank, which is a leading mortgage lender. Richard Banks, currently the commercial banking managing director is set to become the group risk director, the group finance director Chris Rhodes is taking responsibility for the Group’s Treasury and Bryce Glover, director of corporate banking is to becomes md commercial banking.

“The revised organisation structure provides a strong basis for the successful delivery of our strategy, based on delivering value to customers from an efficient Group-wide operating model,” Bennett said.

Buchanan joined Alliance & Leicester from Nomura, the Japanese investment bank where he was CIO and a member of the executive committee. Prior to Nomura he was at Credit Suisse (CSFB) and has in his 18 year technology career also worked outside of banking in the oil and drinks industries with BP and Diageo.

Alliance & Leicester is currently integrating a new Alnova banking system into both its commercial and retail business.
