Telecoms operator NTL:Telewest today confirmed an outage in its broadband service that affected at least 5,000 customers on Monday.

Customers reportedly trying to use the internet from late yesterday afternoon either had a problems with the service or no broadband connection no at all.

The company’s website said the nationwide problem, caused by synchronisation issues with the dynamic allocation of customer internet protocol (IP) addresses, was resolved last night. But a spokeswoman said only 3,000 customers in the Midlands area were affected despite reports of customers from as far afield as London or as late as this morning saying they were also experiencing service problems.

She also said customers in former NTL areas were unaffected and that engineers were still investigating the cause of the problem.

Telewest and NTL merged last year to command a subscriber base of five million customers.
