A "technical issue" has caused some Royal Bank of Scotland and NatWest customers to experience problems with their online banking accounts for several hours this morning.

Customers were able to transfer funds, which would show funds as being debited from accounts, but not show them as credited. The issue went on for several hours and was fixed by midday.

"We are aware of some internal technical problems that impacted our customers’ payment transfers this morning. We have now resolved the problem and are processing payments normally. We apologise for any inconvenience this caused our customers," a spokesperson from RBS told Computerworld UK.

RBS declined to detail the problems.

She added that out of the banks' 13 million customers, only a "really small proportion" were impacted.

Yesterday, online retailer Amazon.com denied that it had been targeted by WikiLeaks "hacktivisits", after its European website went down at the weekend for about half an hour. The company said the outage was caused by a hardware failure.
