Combining in-memory business intelligence (BI) tools with a strong mobility strategy has created a more collaborative business culture at civil engineering material supplier Aggregate Industries. CIO for Aggregate Industries in the UK Mike Gibbons described his strategic vision being to ensure information is easily visible across the organisation in a Q&A with this title’s CIO 100.
Part of the Swiss Holcim Group, Aggregate Industries is a manufacturer and supplier of asphalt, concrete and stone as raw materials to the construction sector. Its manufacturing arm also produce pre-cast concrete building parts and stone manufactured items. Based in Coalville, Leicestershire the organisation also imports cement and operates 60 quarries across the UK as well having a presence in Northern Europe. Aggregate Industries was a primary supplier to the construction of the London 2012 Olympic Games complex.
CIO Mike Gibbons secured a position in the 2015 CIO 100 for his bold data visibility strategy.
“We have been big users of Qlikview for the past four years – it has underpinned our BI strategy,” Gibbons told the CIO 100.
The CIO selected Qlickview for its ease of use and ease of deployment in addition to the technical and user benefits of being an in-memory tool. “Our strategy is also to move to self-service for the creation of data views under a framework of clearly identified data labels.”
Gibbons has introduced the tools to increase collaboration and force visibility of key information. By making information easy and instant, it has changed employee behaviour and how the company works with its customers.
With a tool and information repository in place, Gibbons is using 2015 to develop a series of mobile Apps using Agile development practices to ensure only the right projects are focused on by his team.
“The reality is we do not know exactly what we will deliver but we predict the demand will be high, with expectations of rapid deployment. Key considerations will be the distinction of mode A and mode B teams to keep both capabilities (agile and traditional as options),” he says.
As well as improving the ability for Aggregate Industries to see the information it has, Gibbons has been one of the most aggressive adopters of Google Apps across his organisation.
“The Google enterprise project has been transformational in the way it has changed internal user behaviour and how we collaborate with our customers,” Gibbons told the CIO 100.
