The BBC's iPlayer received more than 120 million TV and radio programme download requests in January this year.

The BBC said the figure, which exceeds its previous record of 100 million in December last year, covers all 20 of the different platforms the catch-up TV service is available on, including the internet, Virgin Media's TV service and the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 console.

The first week of January saw 23.8 million TV show requests, the most in the history of the iPlayer, and eight million radio show requests.

The BBC said the Christmas specials of popular BBC shows Top Gear, Doctor Who and Gavin and Stacey were the three most watched programmes on the service in January, while the most popular time for TV shows on iPlayer to be watched is between 8pm and 10pm.
