HP and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) today announced a joint initiative that the two organisations promise will reduce the IT vendor’s greenhouse gas emissions at its operating facilities worldwide. HP hopes to demonstrate to other companies how to adopt best practices for adopting "green" operating practices.

HP also said that, by 2010, it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions at its facilities to 15% below this year's levels. The company hopes to do this by reducing energy use and investing in renewable energy. It plans to report and verify those emissions based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the World Economic Forum's Global Greenhouse Gas Registry. And it said it will develop energy efficiency measurements for various product categories, as well as goals for improved product performance.

The vendor also plans to put in place educational efforts to address climate change, and will work with WWF to "advance the science and practice of adapting and becoming resilient to climate change," according to a recent statement.
