Police have charged a 60-year-old man for allegedly making threats and sending abusive messages to Conservative MP Louise Mensch via email.

Frank Zimmerman, of Spinney Road, Barnwood in Gloucester, was arrested on 25 August by the Metropolitan Police's Police Central eCrime Unit in response to messages sent to the Corby MP.

Mensch, a mother of three, claimed on Twitter that some of the messages threatened her children. She said on Twitter: "Had some morons threaten my children by email. To those who sent it; get stuffed losers. I have contacted the police via the House of Commons and the email is with them."

Zimmerman has been charged with the improper use of a public communications network, and has been bailed to appear at Gloucester Magistrates' Court on 12 December.

The Tory MP sat on the committee that recently interviewed News International owner Rupert Murdoch, as part of a parliamentary investigation into "hackgate".
