Site downtime appears to be catching with train ticketing site the latest big brand to take an unexpected Internet break for technical reasons.

“We are currently working on our website - please try again in about an hour. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused,” reads a message to hopeful travellers that appeared on Wednesday afternoon.

However, from forum messages it appears the site has suffered intermittent but significant levels of downtime since Tuesday evening on the ticket bookings element of the site, which suggests a larger issue.

By unfortunate coincidence, the downtime happened on the day the Which? consumer organisation lodged a ‘super complaint’ with the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) that names among others for allegedly excessive card booking surcharges.

The disruption also occurred on the same day that the BBC's online presence suffered a major outage for an hour on Tuesday evening.
