Waterstone’s will replace its legacy e-commerce system in order to better cope with a growing catalogue and more website functionality.

The book retailer will implement the Hybris Commerce system, replacing an in-house platform that has been in use since it established the site in 2006.

It said it needed a more scalable platform in order to handle the expanding collection of books it offers online, now numbered at two million titles including e-book downloads.

The company is also introducing more Web 2.0 capabilities to its site, and wants to develop more targeted promotions for online users.

David Kohn, e-commerce head at Waterstone’s, said: “Our online business is currently growing rapidly and we have demanding targets and expectations for our future growth in this channel.

“In order to compete effectively online, we need an e-commerce solution that delivers all of the basics effectively, but which is also flexible and allows for our future development.”

Last year, parent HMV said it had saved £6 million in the first of a three year programme to combine IT and back office functions with those of Waterstone’s.
