Microsoft has reduced the price of the Surface RT by 30%.

The price of the company's first tablet has been slashed from £399 to £279 as Microsoft prepares to launch a new model later this year. The tablet now costs £10 more than Apple's iPad Mini.

The larger 64GB model costs £359 and adding a black Touch Cover costs an extra £80 when it's bundled with the device.

While the Surface RT is a significant amount cheaper, the enterprise-focused Surface Pro model remains at £719 and £799 for the 64GB and 128GB models.

A slide from Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference has confirmed an "Update to Surface RT" and an "Update to Surface Pro" are part of the company's future plans. It is thought that the new Surface models will arrive sometime in the next year.

The new Surface Pro could well be equipped with Intel's latest Haswell processor while the Surface RT running Windows 8.1 will likely run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.
