Waitrose cuts IT bill

Wants more innovative capacity planning to save costs

Waitrose Deliver, the online home delivery division of the supermarket chain, expects to cut IT costs with a new performance management system.

The Transaction Performance Monitoring technology, from supplier Precise, is being used to monitor the performance of the company’s network, hardware and applications.

Using the technology, Waitrose can identify "under-performing" SQL statements in its IBM Websphere Commerce online sales system, and then specify areas for performance improvement rather than completely replace existing IT assets.

It also highlights other areas for improvement, such as reducing the processing power needed, and uses the system to aid with server capacity planning.

The system was selected, after a strategic review concluded that the grocer would need to increase server capacity by up to 40 per cent to cope with an increase in online traffic during Christmas for the delivery service. During the Christmas rush, there can be up to 50,000 simultaneous hits on its individual web pages.

Waitrose, part of the CIO 100 ranked John Lewis group, hopes the new Precise system will enable it to improve IT performance “without massive cost increases” from large technology refreshes.

Bharat Chavda, IT project leader, said performance had been “drastically” improved without needing to change large swathes of technology.

The supermarket offers home delivery from half of its 206 stores, with customers ordering online. As well as the IBM e-commerce system, it uses the IBM Websphere MQ messaging middleware, and runs an IBM DB2 database management platform.

Registration is free, and gives you full access to our extensive white paper library, case studies & analysis, downloads & speciality areas, and more.

Separately, Waitrose uses Oracle HR and payroll systems. Its servers are Microsoft Windows Server based.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
