Nationwide picks SAP for £300m SOA-based systems renewal

Building society begins core banking update

Nationwide will switch to SAP for a banking technology platform, as part of a £300 million business transformation programme, named Voyager.

As part of the Voyager programme, the building society is working with SAP, IBM, Capgemini and KPMG, to implement the new systems in a phased programme, focusing initially on current accounts before moving on to savings, mortgages and branch systems.

SAP said the newest version of its service oriented-architecture (SOA) technology, will streamline core processes, reduce costs and improve turnaround and processing of applications and transactions.

The SAP platform will replace the Unisys 2200 Banking and Savings Platform for banking and savings and the Unisys 2200 Customer Information System which run on Fujitsu mainframes.

SAP said Nationwide will become the first financial services provider in the UK to adopt the newest version of SAP for Banking, which it will use to service its growing Banking, Savings and Mortgage business.

Darin Brumby, divisional director, business systems transformation, Nationwide, said: ""SAP for Banking will give us the flexibility to adapt and respond to unseen future changes and advancements in the industry."

"Not only will it enhance our speed to market with products, it will also improve the overall customer experience with the society while reducing costs."

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions
