Only 8% of businesses have a green IT policy, survey

Chief execs fail to push for change

A meagre eight percent of businesses in the UK have a full green IT policy, and half believe that IT is not responsible for the bulk of businesses’ CO2 emissions.

These are the findings of a new survey by IT distributor Bell Micro, called ‘Passing the Green IT Buck’, which demonstrate that despite high profile calls for greener IT most businesses are still not taking action.

Of those that have a green plan, the main focus is on recycling hardware, meaning less is being done to conserve energy.

Nearly one in five of the 350 senior IT executives questioned feared they would not be ready to implement a green policy within 12 months, if required by legislation.

While 84 per cent of businesses took green issues seriously, half said employees rather than chief executives were driving the change.

“Now must be the time to take a proactive approach to reducing the levels of power consumption and hardware wastage, if not purely to reduce financial expenditure but also because enforcing green policies is being seen as the right ethical response,” said Antony Young, director of services, security and networking at Bell Micro.
