DHL CIO joins Ernst & Young

Eccleston becomes partner and consultant after successful career in logistics

Tony Eccleston, recently European CIO for distribution giants DHL, has become a partner in management consultants Ernst & Young. Eccleston joins the expanding Ernst & Young technology security and risk service.
Eccleston has 19 years of experience to offer Ernst & Young clients. He will focus on improving business and IT performance, mergers and acquisitions and IT cost optimisation.

Eccleston became CIO/Managing Director IT for DHL in Europe in May 2005 and was in charge of a 1000 staff. He reported directly to the main board of DHL and was on the parent company Deutsche Post Global IT board. He joined DHL In 2004 as CIO for the UK and Ireland after the German company acquired Securicor Omega Express, where he had been CIO since October 2002.

Before moving into the logistics industry Eccleston had been eBusiness director at pharmaceutical manufacturers Glaxo SmithKline for two years. In the mid-90s Eccleston was an IT project leader and business analyst with oil company Shell, the company he began his working career with as a graduate trainee. Eccleston cites the opportunity to work on business integration when Glaxo acquired rival pharmaceutical maker Wellcome as the point his career took off. He said the integration of the two companies gave him an insight into areas such as logistics, marketing, research and sales. Eccleston began his career with a Masters in Information Management.

Richard Brown, head of the technology security and risk service at Ernst & Young has secured four new partners, including Eccleston due to an increasing demand for IT advice. Brown’s team in the UK now includes 16 partners. Brown has also secured the services of David Dutt, a partner with Deloitte; Michel Savoie from consultants Bearing Point and Ian Blatchford from accountants Bentley Jennison.

“We have seen a huge increase in demand from public and private sector organisations for independent business focused IT advice,” Brown said, adding that the majority of clients are looking for performance improvement programmes, a review of sourcing strategies, business transformation projects and cost and compliance management.
