Dorset targets £8.6m annual savings in IT overhaul

Centres around SAP-based ERP system

Dorset County Council had said it will target £8.6 million in annual savings from a three-year IT overhaul, as it signed a deal with Capgemini for an SAP-based enterprise resource planning system.

The ERP system, central to the transformation, will help improve working practices and customer service, the council said, as well as replacing existing systems in human resources, procurement, payroll and finance. Efficiencies will come from reducing the amount of duplicated work and streamlining existing processes. The value of the deal has not been disclosed.

The technology is planned to give managers more accessible, up-to-date and accurate information on people, budgets, and learning materials. All staff will be able to update their own information, such as address details, leave requests and expenses claims much more easily and quickly online, the council said.

Elaine Taylor, director of corporate resources at Dorset, said: “The ERP system is the backbone of our change and efficiency programme and will drive us to improve how we work.

“The ERP will replace our HR, payroll, procurement and finance systems and will enable us to reduce duplication and streamline processes, delivering major savings and repaying the investment cost.” She said a number of other county councils were examining the benefits of, or in the process of making, similar IT overhauls.
