Home Office aims for £50m shared services savings

Programme based on Oracle eBusiness ERP

The Home Office has said it will cut between £40 million and £50 million from back office costs, after completing a shared services programme based on Oracle software.

The Shared Business Services programme is run by IT services firm Fujitsu, and centred on Oracle eBusiness enterprise resource planning software.

The shared services integration has been running since 2006. Three years before that, the Home Office installed the eBusiness software in its own operations, covering finance, procurement and human resources, and affecting 25,000 users.

John Collington, programme director at the Home Office, said the department had "successfully delivered a major government IT programme, on time and to budget, which is now delivering tangible benefits to the business, including projected cost savings of £40-50 million”.

Productivity within the Home Office was also being improved as a result of the scheme, the department said, with more self service functions available. Performance increases included improvements in invoice and expenses payments.

The Home Office also said it had improved management information through the scheme, with more “accurate and timely” data available for “improved decision-making”.

In October, the department signed a £330 million contract extension with Fujitsu, providing services to 24,000 IT users in the Home Office and UK Border Agency. Services covered include desktop maintenance, application hosting, and network services and infrastructure, in collaboration with Atos Origin.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
