University of Warwick seek Linux supercomputer

Extended HPC facility will support research into electrically conducting fluids

The University of Warwick is tendering for a new Linux-based High Performance Computing facility for its research Centre for Scientific Computing (CSC).

A “significant” share of the new facility will be used for research in the field of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD - the study of the dynamics of electrically conducting fluids such as plasma and metal liquids), to support the computational requirements of the UK MHD research community. The facility will also be used to support research from other disciplines at the university.

The centre is looking for a facility that is a Linux cluster comprised of multi-core nodes interconnected at high-bandwidth and low-latency. It will also have an attached high-performance storage and parallel file system.

An existing datacentre at the research centre will house the new facility. The datacentre is equipped for up to 100KW of additional IT load and has chilled water infrastructure to accommodate water-cooled racks.

The university’s current approved budget for the procurement is £970,000. However, it expects extra budget to become available “in due course” to allow for expansion of hardware functionality and value up to a maximum £2 million.

The project is expected to last 12 months from the award of contract, with up to three contract renewals possible.

Registration is free, and gives you full access to our extensive white paper library, case studies & analysis, downloads & speciality areas, and more.

Interested suppliers have until 8 August to request documents in relation to the bid, which can be accessed here.

The University of Warwick's tender comes as the Welsh assembly government launched a £40 million project, High Performance Computing Wales for use by businesses and universities across Wales.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
