Aviva chooses NightWatchman to drive down PC energy use

Insurer puts power management software on 30,000 desktops

Insurance giant Aviva is rolling out PC power management tool NightWatchman across 30,000 desktops.

The deployment which follows a successful trial conducted on 856 PCs during a two week period in May 2010, is aimed at cutting costs and driving down energy consumption.

1E, which makes NightWatchman and Aviva, believes the savings could amount to the equivalent annual CO2 emissions of 500 modern family cars.

“We are only too aware of the challenges posed by climate change. Managing our impact on the environment is central to our Corporate Responsibility programme,” said Christine Fraser, property and financial services director at Aviva.

“We are committed to addressing the issue of climate change and strive to eliminate waste and reduce energy usage.  We approached 1E and saw their solution as the best fit for what we need to achieve. We are excited to work together to achieve our carbon management goals.”

1E this week launched NightWatchman 6.0, with new features including:

  • Enterprise View web-based dashboard, designed for senior managers, to give a high-level view of power use.
  • Location-based tariffs – for large organisation facing energy tariffs specific to geographical location and energy provider.
  • Enhanced sleepless client detection offering built-in intelligence to ensure that PCs are being power managed when not in use.

NightWatchman has saved its customers £350 million in energy costs alone and it is now installed on 4.6 million PCs, 1E claimed.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
