BBC creating iOS app for reporters

Journalists to upload stories from iPhones

The BBC is creating an iOS app that will allow its reporters to upload photographs and video directly for use in TV news reports and on the BBC News website.

The Journalism.co.uk website reports that the app, which will be ready in about a month, will also let reporters broadcast directly from their iPhone.

Using technology called Lucy Live, the app will let reporters appear live on air over a 3G signal, meaning that they won't have to carry satellite broadcast equipment with them.

Registration is free, and gives you full access to our extensive white paper library, case studies & analysis, downloads & speciality areas, and more.

"Reporters have been using smart phones for a while now but it was never good quality. You might do it when there was a really important story," Martin Turner, head of operations for newsgathering at the BBC told Journalism.co.uk.

"Now it is beginning to be a realistic possibility to use iPhones and other devices for live reporting, and in the end if you've got someone on the scene then you want to be able to use them," he continued.

Meanwhile, the BBC has announced that its iPlayer service will be available throughout Europe as an iPad app very soon. An iPlayer for iPad app was made available to UK audiences in February.

The BBC's Jana Bennett revealed the news at the Banff World Television Festival earlier this week, but though selected European audiences could get iPlayer by the end of summer, no date has yet been set for a US launch.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
