HP in DWP job offshoring U-turn

More than 200 UK jobs saved

HP has abandoned its plans to offshore work at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to India following a campaign by members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union.

As a result, more than 200 IT jobs at HP sites in Newcastle, Lytham and Sheffield have been saved.

HP provides the core computer systems for pensions and benefit payments to the DWP’s customers, the job vacancies and job searches system, Labour Market Systems and the operational support for a range of applications.

“Having considered a range of options DWP and HP have agreed not to move this work offshore,” said HP.

Staff working in IT support at the DWP have been carrying out industrial action in response to HP’s plans to move jobs from the UK to Bangalore in India since last month. The action consisted of working to rule and refusing to co-operate with the process of exporting the work.

As well as concern over the job losses, PCS said that the offshoring plans had posed risks to data security.

Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary, said: “This is very good news for our members who have campaigned hard on this and been rewarded with saving their jobs.

“But it also means that the very real concerns we raised about data security have been listened to, and we are pleased that ministers have seen sense.”

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
