Atos seeks British IT student talent

Prize includes London 2012 Olympic tickets

Atos, the IT service company, has launched a new competition aimed to find the IT talent of the future from 25 universities in the UK and around the world.

Participants have a chance to win an e-tablet, return flights, accommodation and event tickets to the London 2012 Olympics. The overall winners will also have a behind-the-scenes tour of the Olympics, including a visit to the Olympics Technology Operations Centre in Canary Wharf.

All the finalist prize winners (first, second and third) will receive an e-tablet, Atos Diploma and the chance to apply for internships to work with Atos. In addition, all participants will be able to apply for an internship with Atos in the delivery and operation of the London 2012 Olympics IT solution, between June and September 2012.

The theme of this first competition, which will take place every two years, is smart mobility.

Registration is free, and gives you full access to our extensive white paper library, case studies & analysis, downloads & speciality areas, and more.

Teams of between two and five students are being called to take part in the competition, which will involve coding, drafting, sketching and prototyping applications that can be used anywhere, anytime and on any device. The UK universities taking part include Imperial College London, Nottingham University and Warwick University.

They will be mentored by members of the Atos Scientific Community, a global network of around 90 business technologists at the company.

Gilles Grapinet, senior executive vice president of global functions at Atos, said: “We are excited to see how the students will bring their knowledge and experience into Smart Mobility applications that are both innovative and commercially viable.”

The teams will enter their submissions by December 2011, and 15 shortlisted teams will be announced on 15 December. The three finalists will be revealed in April 2012, and the overall winner unveiled at an awards ceremony in May 2012.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
