Atos acquires 50% stake in events IT firm MSL

Olympic IT provider targets further events growth

Atos has acquired a 50 percent stake in MSL Group, in order to bolster its specialist IT capabilities for large events.

Under the deal, for which a value has not been disclosed, Atos will gain the option of an outright acquisition of MSL at a later stage.

MSL provides real-time data systems to large sports events, and has a €15 million annual turnover.

The acquisition grows Atos' sports events capabilities. Atos is already the lead IT provider to the Olympics and Paralympics, including London 2012.

Atos and MSL have worked together on IT at sports events since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and they also work regularly on tennis events. By combining, the companies will provide IT and data services for timing and scoring, information diffusion for the media, TV graphics, games management, and system integration.

"Today's announcement marks a major milestone in our strategy to be the global IT leader for major events," said Patrick Adiba, head of major events at Atos. "We have a strong heritage in this specialised IT, having delivered 50 successful global events worldwide since 1989."

Staff at Atos major events and MSL Group are based in Spain.

In other Atos news, the company recently hit the headlines as its chief executive Thierry Breton insisted it would stick to a company-wide email ban, in an aggressive effort to save staff hours' of time every day.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
