SSD maker Micron bags UK virtualisation vendor Virtensys

Micron says PCIe technology will allow SSD capacity sharing

Micron Technology on Friday announced it has signed an agreement to acquire Virtensys Ltd., a UK-based provider of PCIe-sharing products. No financial details on the deal were released.

Micron plans to use Virtensys' PCIe virtualisation technology to allow datacentres to share local solid-state drive (SSDs) storage across multiple servers.

For example, Virtensys' VIO-4000 Series PCIe Sharing appliances can virtualise network and storage connectivity to a rack of servers, providing up to 80Gbps of Ethernet uplink bandwidth, 32 Gbps of Fibre Channel bandwidth, and/or up to 16TB of local storage connectivity to up to 16 servers.

Edward Doller, Micron's chief memory systems architect, said the acquisition would enable "a combination of enterprise technology solutions that have the opportunity to virtualise SSD storage on the path to a more flexible and dynamic datacentre ."

Micron will continue to support their deployment of I/O virtualisation products. We have been working closely with Virtensys to include our PCIe SSD [P320] into their appliance and plan on rolling that solution out later this year," Doller said.

Micron said it expects the transaction to close by the end of the month.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
