HMRC board gains former Tesco CIO

Taxman brings on IT expert

Colin Cobain, formerly chief information officer at Tesco, has joined HM Revenue & Customs as non-executive director.

Until November 2007, Cobain was CIO at Tesco, the UK’s largest supermarket chain. At Tesco he made significant changes through technology, led by the “Tesco in a box” suite of operating systems, which has been rolled out in new stores around in the world including the recent US launch, and an efficient supply chain management suite that aims to ensure shelves are well stocked.

He is currently interim CIO at brewer SAB Miller. Prior to Tesco, Cobain had a number of different roles at Kingfisher Group, owner of B&Q, acting as channels director, systems director, business development director, and head of management information systems. He was also IT director at Thorn EMI.

Cobain joined HMRC alongside three other non-executive directors who have experience outside IT.
