Granger: The final word

“Stuff goes wrong all the time. You know, computers do fail. But what we’re seeing is a sort of hysterical coverage. What I should be judged on is whether we’re fixing it quickly and ensuring it’s as good as anything else anywhere on the planet. Measure me on those things and I know we will not be found lacking.”

The best defence

One of the most frustrating aspects of working for somebody else is the dreaded ‘diktat from above’. Diktats are not requests, they are demands. Most workers, when faced with an order to do something they do not understand or support, disconnect emotionally from the task and follow through in lacklustre fashion.

Just say know

It is a scenario scary enough to induce night sweats in even the steeliest CIO. Your CEO, just back from a conference, strides into your office. Not only that, they can deliver better services levels. After all, it is what they do.

Outsourcing trailblazer

All change

Success has many fathers, failure is an orphan. But when it comes to business transformation projects, failure is not an orphan, instead it is unfairly identified as the offspring of the single parent: IT. However, now is not the time to complain about prejudice but to assess how best to approach the biggest project of all. Even a definition of a business transformation project can sound painfully ambitious: “combining strategic, process and organisational change and technology development resulting in substantial financial benefits.”

A source of concern

If CIOs were to believe everything they hear from vendors, they would think that outsourcing had taken over the world and there were no inhouse IT departments left. While this patently is not the case, it is true to say that the market is growing steadily and evolving as maturity sets in.
