Five years ago software as a service (SaaS) firm Salesforce.com held its first user conference in the ballroom of a hotel in downtown San Francisco; this year it hosted the 2007 Dreamforce conference and needed to take over the giant Moscone Convention Centre in order to house the 7,000 attendees who poured through the doors.

More top-level shuffling within Salesforce.com with the news that long-time CFO Steve Cakebread is to be bumped up to president and chief strategy officer early next year. Cakebread nearly quit the firm before and made an at-the-time unexplained reversal of his decision. Guess that's been explained now... Cakebread's a Salesforcecom veteran, much liked by the analyst community, so hanging on to him is all to the good for the company.
