CIO Summit 2010 part 8: John Saffrett; Leon Schumacher

In September 2010, CIO held its inaugural summit in London, attended by around 80 CIOs and other IT leaders.

In this final video of the day, Rick Pastore, MD of editorial and programmes at the CIO Executive Council starts off proceedings by mapping out the evolution of the CIO within the organisation.

He introduces NewEdge European CIO John Saffrett, six minutes and 50 seconds into the video to talk about some practical examples about how he has positioned the IT department as the engine of the business strategy within his organisation.

At 16 minutes into this video, Pastore invites former group CIO at Novartis, Leon Schumacher to talk about how CIOs need to take their staff with them on the journey. It’s their attitudes that make or break the IT leader’s attempt to be seen as a business leader by business line managers.

Other speakers return to the stage at 32 minutes and 15 seconds into this video to answer questions about CIO leadership skills from the audience. Saffrett and Schumacher are joined by Guardian Media Group COO Derek Gannon, Standard & Poors international head of IT Jora Gill and Hitachi Consulting’s Stan Dacre.

The cloud 2015 vision

Cloud computing is an important transition and a paradigm shift in IT services delivery - one that promises large gains in efficiency and flexibility at a time when demands on data centers are growing exponentially. The tools, building blocks, solutions, and best practices for cloud computing are evolving and challenges to deploying cloud solutions need to be considered.

The consumerisation of technology

iPads are the must-have fad. Android is the rising mobile platform -- Everywhere you turn, the news is about personal, smart, mobile devices and their impact on business and on IT.

Big data analytics

Broadly, there are two ways to think of Big Data technologies. The first is as an extension of what many organisations are already doing with business analytics. Gaining insight from business information is something that has been happening for decades, but the challenges and opportunities are now greater than ever before.

Virtualisation: benefits, challenges and solutions

The majority of organisations have already implemented server virtualisation and most intend to implement additional server virtualisation during the next year. The primary factors driving the movement to deploy server virtualisation are cost savings and the ability to dynamically provision and move VMs among physical servers. There are however, a number of significant challenges associated with server virtualisation.
