Channel 4 CTO Bob Harris is leaving at the end of this month to set up his own consultancy to help companies deal with disruptive technologies, like cloud computing.
Channel 4 was an early adopter of cloud services using Amazon Web Services (AWS), and is also a Hadoop Big Data analytics convert.
Channel 4 is using the scalability of cloud computing to handle a 10-fold growth in data, enabling the broadcaster to gain better insight into customer habits.
Harris's new business is Ethereality Associates. Harris told ComputerWeekly: "Having joined Channel 4 in 1999 with a plan to stay for five years, it was time to move on.
"In reality, it's been a blast. In the early days we launched Big Brother with what were, at the time, unprecedented levels of web traffic and live video streaming."
Channel 4 also launched on-demand service 4oD in 2006, which is supported by AWS.
From January 1, Harris told Computer Weekly, his technical responsibilities at Channel 4 were taken over by Orpheus Warr, who is Channel 4's chief architect and head of technical strategy.
