CTOs in the USA follow similar career paths to their counterparts in the UK, although there are some striking differences, according to research from agil8.
The agile and lean training consulting company analysed the figures behind the careers of the CTOs at Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Adobe and Qualcomm.
On average it took them 24 years to reach their roles after leaving higher education, six years more than their counterparts in the UK that reached the CIO 100.
They have worked in four companies and in eight positions on average, significantly less than the UK average of 10 and 11 respectively.
Their average maximum stay in any one position was five years and the minimum was one, similar to the UK average of five years and six months; and eight months respectively.
Their careers show that while there is no standard path to becoming a CTO, there are some clear similarities in the routes taken to the position.
