Hornby, the international models and collectibles group, has appointed Richard Ames, former IT director at Ladbrokes, as its CEO.

Ames was head of product, responsible for IT and trading, at Ladbrokes until July 2012. His departure was announced after a profit warning in the betting firm’s digital business, which was partly blamed on delays in the delivery of some technology projects.

Nonetheless, Hornby is welcoming Ames to the company for his extensive experience of "leading fast-moving consumer-facing businesses".

Roger Canham, Hornby chairman, said: "Ames has a wealth of experience of leading consumer facing-businesses. I was impressed with his track record of implementing successful marketing strategies and managing complex supply chains."

Hornby highlighted Ames' early achievements at Ladbrokes, which he joined in 2005 to run the UK and Ireland retail operations and was responsible for managing a successful retail turnaround strategy.

Ames began his career at Philips Consumer Electronics. Prior to Ladbrokes, he held a number of senior roles at Dixons, including marketing director and purchasing director in domestic appliances. He also helped lead the consumer electronics division at Asda Wal-Mart.

Ames will take up the CEO role in April. He takes over from Frank Martin, who announced his plans to retire last year.
