WS Atkins is the UK’s largest consultancy to undertake engineering and design projects in markets such as rail, highways and defence. In 2005, the organisation set up two steering committees to align IT more closely with its different businesses and to streamline IT decision-making.

Over the last year, this has led it to introduce the first phase of a global collaboration initiative, which has resulted in the deployment of tools to enable staff to work together more effectively no matter where they are in the world.

The aim is to boost efficiency, support international growth, enable home and remote-working – and at the same time contribute to reducing the firm’s environmental footprint.

This year will see the company focusing on improving existing collaboration systems and deploying new ones. This will include a range of hosted applications and videoconferencing technology.

Although the engineering sector is still in growth mode, another goal for WS Atkins last year was to cut the cost of delivering IT services to business units by a net 10 per cent, which it achieved.

But this agenda is set to continue over the year ahead, with the focus being on delivering more for less, or for the same amount of money. As a result, the company is in the process of re-evaluating its business processes and intends to implement common ones across all its different geographies, including Europe, the Middle East and China.
