National Grid continues to be a strong player in the global utilities market and created £3.5 billion in cash generation in 2008 and £15.6 billion in operating profit.
It has outsourced its voice and data networks to Vodafone in a major three year deal worth millions. As an organisation reliant on mobile engineers the company is a large scale user of wireless technology.
IT operations have been re-organised in the last 12 months and National Grid said it is on track to record savings of £68 million from these. The company continues to expand, especially in the US and standardisation projects will continue to pull all IT operations together. National Grid has formed global centres in the UK and US for IT, business processes and finance and is also implementing standardised processes for its customer services, work delivery and asset management.
