The Welsh Assembly appointed a former NHS IT leader as its CIO this summer. Gwyn Thomas will remain chief executive of Informing Healthcare, a Welsh Assembly project, as well as CIO of the Welsh Assembly.
Informing Healthcare is a programme that aims to improve health care services in Wales through improved information access. Thomas joined this role in April 2005 after a career as chief executive of the NHS Information Authority, a precursor to the NHS Connecting for Health project currently being implemented at the NHS.
The Welsh Assembly has this year signed a £4.6 million contract with Siemens IT Solutions and Objective to implement document management across the devolved government body. Objective, which is based in Australia, said the Welsh Assembly will have 6,500 users.
