The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills is one of newest departments in Whitehall, formed from the merger of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. The powerhouse of training and business reform is headed by Lord Mandelson at present.

Lord Mandelson outlined the department's vision in the summer of 2009: "Our purpose is to help the government bring the country out of recession and build up our economic strengths and competitiveness...The government needs to provide active and urgent help to business and employees."

The merger of the two departments means they are both rationalising their IT usage. One major project is the reduction in the number of website the department needs. It has signed a hosting contract with Eduserv, a specialist in website provision and access management. Eduserv has a strong pedigree in the academic world and has hosted and managed a number of systems for universities and academic body the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC).

Rationalising the number of websites is one of the key objectives of the government's service transformation agenda.
