J Sainsbury plc is Britain’s third largest supermarket chain, it was the largest, but the recent aggressive growth of Tesco and Asda has demoted it to third with 16.5 per cent of the UK supermarket sector. A 15 per cent share of the firm is still held by the Sainsbury family which set the company up in 1869.  Sainsbury is listed on the London Stock Exchange.
