Carpetright has said it has improved management information, stock control and customer orders following a £4.7 million rollout of Microsoft software.

The carpet superstore chain, which in the last year bought Storeys and Carpetworld, said it has also been able to cut staff levels by 90 people in the last year, as a result of the implementation simplifying processes.
Carpetright is rolling out a system based on Microsoft Navision, also known as Microsoft Dynamics. The system is being implemented by K3 Landsteinar, a Microsoft service provider, and rollout will be complete by October, Carpetright said.

The system ties into the Carpetright central SAP platform (see related story below), and handles all in-store customer order processing, including quotes, orders, electronic point of sale and stock management. Carpetright had gained a range of different systems through acquisitions, which it is now standardising on the Navision software.

“The new store computer system, Navision, which forms part of the major IT investment that we have made over the last three years, continued to be rolled out during the year,” Carpetright said in a statement.

The system has now gone live in 470 stores, and Carpetright said it is “converting approximately 10 stores per week”.

“The benefits include better management information, improved stock control and an improved customer order process,” it said.

Carpetright is also attempting to improve its supply chain in order to cut costs, speed up delivery and improve communication between warehouses and the head office.

It said it has also improved customer communication routes. “Our customers are now able to make comments on service via email as well as the telephone, and system improvements allow us to capture customer service comments more easily.”

Carpetright said IT was a key factor in business growth. But at the end of a “challenging” year, it reported an 11 per cent drop in pre-tax profits to £59.5 million.
