Microsoft is to fix five Windows vulnerabilities tomorrow, but has not ruled a separate patch later this month for a Word fix.

Some of the five patches are considered ‘critical’ by the software company, and will include a Visual Studio fix, said a company spokesperson.

But the vulnerability that attacks at least nine versions of the application on both PC and Mac versions of Microsoft Word and Works may be patched before next month’s update, scheduled for 12 January 2007, they added. In the meantime, Microsoft said it is investigating the matter.

In the meantime, security experts advise not to open or save any Word files from untrusted sources, as the hole can execute a malicious attack on a user’s system.
