The UK’s largest trade union, UNISON has today announced a deal to develop and migrate to a new, improved wide area network (WAN).

Converged business voice and data company Azzurri will handle this crucial telecommunications component part of UNISON’s infrastructure development, connecting its 33 offices nationwide and giving improved access to the organisation’s network. The design, project management and implementation of an internet protocol (IP) telephony system will also give UNISON one single telephony platform to deliver cost savings and increase network resilience.

The union’s existing office telephone systems will be replaces with an Avaya Communications Manager telephony platform to improve the reliability, resilience and availability of its phone system. UNISON’s regional offices will also benefit from the enhanced administration and management tools the new solution will provide.

“We wanted one supplier who could deal with all aspects of the implementation, including design, migration and ongoing support. After a competitive exercise, Azzurri stood out as the partner of choice to deliver the appropriate solution, we were impressed by their approach and considered that they offered the expertise and value for money we were looking for,” said Laurence Arterton, infrastructure and telecoms manager, UNISON.

UNISON is the largest union in the UK, with over 1.3 million members and 33 offices nationwide. Members are people working in the public services, for private contractors providing public services and in the essential utilities. They include frontline staff and managers working full or part time in local authorities, the NHS, the police service, colleges and schools, the electricity, gas and water industries, transport and the voluntary sector.
