Department store John Lewis has posted record Christmas online sales.
As the company announced it had had its best ever Christmas retail week in the seven days to 23 December, with £133 million of revenues, it highlighted the dramatic growth in its web sales.
Johnlewis.com, which has in recent years been overhauled and given a mobile format, posted a 42 percent rise in sales from the period last year. It also broke a record revenue tally set the previous week. Last year, the department store chain appointed a new chief information officer: Paul Coby, the former CIO at British Airways.
While the company did not disclose specific online revenues, it highlighted the effect of a large number of customers reserving items online before collecting them in store. During the week to Christmas, ‘Click and Collect’ order values were up 76 percent compared to the previous year.
John Lewis said that its rise in sales, including online, was particularly notable in a “challenging” economic environment.
The news comes in a week that Next, which saw in-store sales drop, said its online operation had effectively rescued revenues in the lead up to Christmas.
