The first Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) of four to be formed across the country has been formed this week in to combat violent extremism in Greater Manchester.

The CTUs – also to open in West Yorkshire, the West Midlands and London – will work in conjunction with security services, including MI5, to gather intelligence on possible terrorist attacks in the UK and abroad.

Surveillance technology and specialist forensic computer data skills will be key to CTU liaison with other officers and in recovering information from PCs seized in raids.

Other, small Regional Intelligence Cells are also being set up to support the four main CTUs in other regions including Wales, the South West and East Midlands.
